Izeÿl, Suite d'orchestre - Gabriel Pierné
Izeÿl is an “Indian” drama in 4 acts (in verse), by Armand Sylvestre (1837/1901) and Eugène Morand (1853/1930), with music by Gabriel Pierné (1863/1937). Premiered on January 24, 1894 at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, with Sarah Bernhardt (1844/1923) in the lead role, it features characters whose imaginations are nourished by the oriental tales that the late 19th century was so fond of: in addition to Izeÿl, the beautiful heroine, there are the Prince, Princess Haraschi, Seyndya, Yoghy and Tukkutuky.
Gabriel Pierné extracted an orchestral suite from his original music, whose score indicates that the parts for 3rd and 4th horns, trumpets and cornets, tuba, large drum and celesta are optional.
This transcription appears in 2023, the centenary of the death of Sarah Bernhardt, to whom an exhibition at the Petit Palais in Paris is dedicated. It is also Gabriel Pierné's 160th birthday.
A public performance, in the Grand Galerie of the Petit Palais, is given on July 9, 2023, by the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix de la Préfecture de Police.
