Roman Carnival Overture - Hector Berlioz
For Wind Orchestra
The Hector Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture is one of the works in the repertoire of harmony orchestras, in the tradition of classical transcriptions appreciated by orchestras and the public alike. These adaptations then met the criteria of the period in which they were created: the concerts were given mainly outdoors, thus requiring a different orchestral thickness from the acoustics of concert halls. In addition, to facilitate reading like instrumental playing, the score was often transposed.
Today, not only are the concert halls completely open to wind orchestras, but also, a few decades of progress in instrumental work, as in technical mastery, make it possible to become much more faithful to the original version.
This transcription aims to be both the most respectful of Hector Berlioz's score, and responding as best as possible to the color of the wind orchestra. The original tone is therefore restored, as the parts of woodwind, brass and percussion are the mirror of those of origin, with the clarinets in A, in particular. It remained to restore the strings, as closely as possible to the sound impression desired by the composer.
