César FRANCK (1822-1890) - Prelude, Fugue and Variations in B minor, Op. 18
Originally composed for piano and harmonium, this work is one of six pieces for organ written between 1860 and 1862. It is dedicated to his friend Camille Saint-Saens. Here again, the contrapuntal writing, as much as the formal structure, are a tribute to Bach: the expression sought is one of religious meditation, carried by a slow tempo and great rhythmic stability. A number of details, such as the last bars, directly evoke Bach; it is the nature of the harmony, increasingly chromatic and modulating, that best represents the stylistic evolution between Bach and Franck.
