Haydn - The Seven Last Words of Christ
The seven last words of Christ are the phrases spoken by Jesus just before his death, crucified.
Taken from four gospels, they are in the following order:
"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." Luke 23:34
"Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." Luke 23:43
"Jesus said to his mother: "Woman, this is your son." Then he said to the disciple: "This is your mother." John 19:26-27
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (in Aramaic: Eloï, EloÏ, lama sabbaqthani?) Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34
"I thirst." John 19:28
"It is finished" John 19:29-30
"Father, into your hand I commend my spirit." Luke 23:46
First performed in Cadix, Spain, in 1786 in instrumental form, the work was reinterpreted the following year in a version for string quartet and finally with the text, in the form of an oratorio.
