Odette Gartenlaub wrote almost all of her songs for voice and piano during her stay at the Villa Medici in Rome between 1949 and 1952, after she had obtained the First Grand Prize for Musical Composition. These early pieces are closely linked to her career as a pianist and composer and are mostly dedicated to female singers with whom she gave recitals.
